Five year old Elizabeth is a cheerful girl despite her tough past. Her father neglected the family and her mother left her in the care of Elizabeth`s grandmother, because she left for another town to find a job. Elizabeth and her sister live in a mud house with their grandmother who hardly earns enough money as a peasant to be able to feed both of her granddaughters. Elizabeth says she enjoys sleeping, because it is the time when she can dream. She craves to be able to go to school like her friends do. It is impossible for her grandmother to let Elizabeth study.
